Everyone wants rights. Very few talk about duties.

And that imbalance? It’s everywhere. Homes. Offices. Relationships. Society. It’s not even subtle anymore. We’re wired to demand what we think we deserve. We want it faster, louder, and with hashtags. But we rarely stop to think about what we owe in return.

Let me elaborate this with some examples:

Society

People want better roads. Cleaner cities. Efficient systems. Honest governance. Fair enough. But when it’s time to vote? Or pay taxes? Or even learn about who’s standing for election? Silence.

It’s like we want the outcome without doing the prerequisites. We want better, without showing up. Democracy doesn’t break because of politicians. It breaks when people stop participating.

Family & Relationships

In relationships, it’s the same pattern. Everyone wants to be understood, heard, supported. But how many are willing to do the boring, everyday work of understanding someone else?

It turns into math: “I did this much, now it’s your turn.”

Instead of splitting the full 100% of life’s load, it becomes a game of keeping score. And let’s be honest; nothing good ever comes from scoreboard relationships.

Workplace

Offices are no different.

Everyone wants the raise. The flexibility. The praise. But when something breaks? When someone needs to step up? When there’s a mess to clean? Suddenly it’s “not my job.”

People want the perks of the title, but not the responsibilities it comes with. And this isn’t about hard work for the sake of it. It’s about not ghosting when it’s inconvenient.

Social Media Culture

The land of opinions.

People go from silent to militant in a tweet. Outrage is effortless. Clout is king. Nuance is dead.

Post a hot take. Ride the wave. Change your stance next week. No one cares. Because the game isn’t about being right-it’s about being seen.

And that “strong beliefs, loosely held” line? It’s become a get-out-of-jail-free card for inconsistency.

We live in a world where voicing a problem gets more applause than actually doing anything about it.

Systemic Enablers

Part of the problem? Systems don’t reward people for showing up consistently. There’s rarely a consequence for doing less. And very little appreciation for doing more.

So people game the system. Minimum effort, maximum optics. And the cycle continues.

Public Institutions

Look at public sector roles. Government jobs. Cushy perks. Lifetime security. But somewhere, the cause behind the job gets lost.

The title remains. The work fades. The system survives. But the purpose dies a slow, quiet death.

Final Thought

None of this is a finger-point. I’m part of the same society. I’ve slipped. I’ve coasted. I’ve made excuses.

But noticing the pattern helps. At least it gives me the option to interrupt it, even if just once in a while.

So maybe next time I want something-an outcome, a result, a right-I’ll also ask:

Did I do my part?

Not because someone’s watching. Not because it’ll get me points.

But because that’s the only way things are supposed to work.
