RIP Jimmy Carter – DanLynch.org

Hello everyone, it’s been a while since my last update but some recent news spurred me into action. Former US President Jimmy Carter died at the age of 100 right before New Year. Some of you reading this will already know why this prompted me to write, but for those who don’t, I wrote a song many moons ago about the great man and I have felt an affinity for him ever since.

Regardless of your political persuasions, you can’t ignore that this was a man who physically built homes for homeless people with his own hands, helped many people worldwide through the Carter Center and won a Nobel Peace Prize for the good work he undertook after leaving political office.

Back in 2009/10 I wrote a song with my band 20lb Sounds and the lyrics are actually all true facts about Jimmy’s life. We wrote it together and I must give Ross (our drummer) full credit for the second verse lyrics. Including the nugget about Jimmy being given the freedom of the City of Newcastle in the UK. This resulted in the immortal line “The proudest day for old Mrs Gordy …was when her son was crowned a Geordie”.

I am conscious that this post could seen as an attempt to cash in on his death but I wanted to share my own heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. Regardless of your political leanings, you cannot deny that we lost a good guy and positive influence on the world. At the beginning of 2025 I feel like we could do with a lot more kindness and understanding in the world today. If Jimmy stood for one thing it was certainly that.

So rest in peace Jimmy Carter, we will miss you man.
